BACKGROUND: Revision of tumor-type prosthetic fractures is very challenging in clinical work. Traditional repair methods may not be able to meet the needs of complex cases or cause greater bone damage. Therefore, more effective and reliable solutions need to be found. CASE PRESENTATION: This study presents a novel revision technique for managing fractures of tumor-type total elbow prostheses. A 57-year-old female patient was diagnosed with a left distal humeral bone tumor accompanied by pathological fracture and underwent customized tumor-type total elbow prosthesis arthroplasty. After 5 years, she experienced pain and encountered difficulty in flexing the left elbow while lifting heavy objects. The X-ray examination revealed a fracture of the distal humeral prosthesis. As a response, the elbow joint was initially explored, and the damaged component of the prosthesis was extracted. Subsequently, we utilized 3D printing technology to design a split-piece sleeve prosthesis and effectively restored the fractured left distal humerus implant. During the 2-year follow-up, The X-ray demonstrated satisfactory positioning of the prosthesis, which remained securely affixed without any indications of loosening. The Mayo Elbow Performance Score (MEPS) reached 80 points, the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society (MSTS) attained a score of 28 points, and the range of motion of the elbow was measured between 25° and 110°, revealing favorable functional outcomes. CONCLUSION: The utilization of a 3D printed split-piece sleeve prosthesis presents a viable clinical treatment strategy for addressing fractures in tumor-type elbow prostheses.

BACKGROUND: Gastric cancer (GC) is the fifth most common and the fourth most lethal malignant tumour in the world. Most patients are already in the advanced stage when they are diagnosed, which also leads to poor overall survival. The effect of postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy for advanced GC is unsatisfactory with a high rate of distant metastasis and local recurrence. AIM: To investigate the safety and efficacy of a programmed cell death 1 (PD-1) inhibitor combined with oxaliplatin and S-1 (SOX) in the treatment of Borrmann large type III and IV GCs. METHODS: A retrospective analysis (IRB-2022-371) was performed on 89 patients with Borrmann large type III and IV GCs who received neoadjuvant therapy (NAT) from January 2020 to December 2021. According to the different neoadjuvant treatment regimens, the patients were divided into the SOX group (61 patients) and the PD-1 + SOX (P-SOX) group (28 patients). RESULTS: The pathological response (tumor regression grade 0/1) in the P-SOX group was significantly higher than that in the SOX group (42.86% vs 18.03%, P = 0.013). The incidence of ypN0 in the P-SOX group was higher than that in the SOX group (39.29% vs 19.67%, P = 0.05). The use of PD-1 inhibitors was an independent factor affecting tumor regression grade. Meanwhile, the use of PD-1 did not increase postoperative complications or the adverse effects of NAT. CONCLUSION: A PD-1 inhibitor combined with SOX could significantly improve the rate of tumour regression during NAT for patients with Borrmann large type III and IV GCs.

Rapid economic development inevitably leads to the discharge of a large amount of common industrial solid waste (CISW), which not only pollutes the environment but also restricts economic development in turn. In this study, a dynamic common industrial solid waste (DCISW) model is developed to analyze the retrospectively CISW development in Shanghai from 2000 to 2017 and simulate prospectively multi-perspective emission reduction measures. Specifically, the dynamic linkages between CISW and socio-economics are established at both the systematic and sectoral levels through input-output analysis, ecological network analysis, and related socio-economic indicators. Abatement measure simulations are conducted using RAS and other methods. The findings reveal that the growth of CISW in Shanghai is closely related to its fast-growing economy. The Others sector (OS) receives the most CISW from other sectors, while the Mining industry (MI) sends the most CISW to others. From production-based, consumption-based, and income-based perspectives, Chemical Products (CP) consistently remain the largest contributors. For the proposed waste generation intensity (WGI) indicator, the Mining industry (MI) is regarded as the main sector in all three perspectives. Moreover, the MI consistently emerges as the key sector of the system. CISW simulations indicate that improving the MI emission technology and increasing the MI output value will be top priorities for CISW emission reduction in Shanghai. This study is expected to provide scientific support to address the CISW problem in Shanghai and other similar fast-growing metropolises.

BACKGROUND: Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) is a disorder characterised by the calcification and ossification of ligaments and entheses. It is a frequent occurrence in elderly males, but rarely encountered in younger individuals. CASE SUMMARY: A 24-year-old male was admitted to the hospital due to low back pain accompanied with numbness in both lower limbs for 10 d. Upon clinical examination and imaging tests, the patient was diagnosed with DISH with Scheuermann disease and thoracic spinal stenosis. Before the operation and medical treatment, the patient had hypoesthesia of the skin below the xiphoid process. Afterward, a standard laminectomy was conducted using ultrasonic bone curette and internal fixation was applied. Subsequently, the patient was given corticosteroids, neurotrophic drugs, hyperbaric oxygen and electric stimulation. As a result of the treatment, the patient's sensory level decreased to the navel level and there was no major change in the muscle strength of the lower limbs. During follow-up, the patient's skin sensation has returned to normal. CONCLUSION: This case is a rare instance of DISH co-existing with Scheuermann's disease in a young adult. This provides a valuable reference point for spine surgeons, as DISH is more commonly observed in middle-aged and elder adults.

Detecting atrial fibrillation (AF) of short single-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) with low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is a key of the wearable heart monitoring system. This study proposed an AF detection method based on feature fusion to identify AF rhythm (A) from other three categories of ECG recordings, that is, normal rhythm (N), other rhythm (O), and noisy (∼) ECG recordings. So, the four categories, that is, N, A, O, and ∼ were identified from the database provided by PhysioNet/CinC Challenge 2017. The proposed method first unified the 9 to 60 seconds unbalanced ECG recordings into 30 s segments by copying, cutting, and symmetry. Then, 24 artificial features including waveform features, interval features, frequency-domain features, and nonlinear feature were extracted relying on prior knowledge. Meanwhile, a 13-layer one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1-D CNN) was constructed to yield 38 abstract features. Finally, 24 artificial features and 38 abstract features were fused to yield the feature matrix. Random forest was employed to classify the ECG recordings. In this study, the mean accuracy (Acc) of the four categories reached 0.857. The F 1 of N, A, and O reached 0.837. The results exhibited the proposed method had relatively satisfactory performance for identifying AF from short single-lead ECG recordings with low SNR.

BACKGROUND: Existing studies have reported the significant association between atrophic glossitis (AG) and hematinic deficiencies, including iron, folate and vitamin B12 deficiency. However, these findings were inconsistent. AG can be graded as partial or complete atrophy. It is still unclear whether hematinic deficiencies are associated with the grading of AG. METHODS: 236 AG patients and 208 sex- and age-matched healthy controls were enrolled in this study. Hematological tests including complete blood count, and serum levels of folate, ferritin and vitamin B12 were performed. The AG group was divided into those with partial AG and those with complete AG according to the extent of papillary atrophy. Statistical analysis was performed to assess whether hematinic deficiencies are risk factors for AG and its grading. RESULTS: Compared with the healthy controls, AG patients had significantly higher frequencies of vitamin B12 deficiency (68.22%), ferritin deficiency (13.98%) and anemia (21.61%). The differences in hematinic deficiencies and anemia between AG patients and healthy controls changed according to gender and age. The frequencies of serum vitamin B12 deficiency and anemia in the complete AG subgroup were significantly higher than those in the partial AG subgroup. Logistic regression analysis revealed that vitamin B12 deficiency and anemia were significantly correlated with AG and its grading. The AG patients with vitamin B12 deficiency responded well to supplement therapy. CONCLUSION: AG could be an important clinical indicator for potential vitamin B12 deficiency, especially when the degree of tongue atrophy more than 50% and complete atrophy. Vitamin B12 deficiency might play an etiological role in the development of AG.

BACKGROUND: Lingual linear lesions (LLLs) are the oral linear lesions located on the dorsum, lateral borders, and/or ventral surface of tongue. It has been suggested that LLLs might be an early clinical sign of vitamin B12 deficiency. Here, a retrospective study was conducted to further investigate and validate the association between LLL and vitamin B12 deficiency. METHODS: Based on the clinical examination, patients with LLLs were enrolled and analyzed retrospectively. Data regarding clinical and laboratory features were obtained. Follow-up was done at least 6 months following appropriate supplementation therapy. RESULTS: A total of 57 patients, consisting of 20 males and 37 females with a mean age of 59.12 years (range, 18-80), were enrolled in this study. The hematological examination revealed that 56 (98.25%) of the 57 patients had severe serum vitamin B12 deficiency, and the other 1 patient had a borderline low level of vitamin B12 . All the enrolled patients responded well to cobalamin replacement therapy. CONCLUSION: LLLs might be a clinical sign strongly suggestive of severe vitamin B12 deficiency.

BACKGROUND: Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a relatively common mucocutaneous disorder, and its causative factors and pathogenesis are not fully understood. Existing studies on the association between hematinic deficiencies and OLP are limited and inconsistent. The aim of this study was to assess the hematinic deficiencies in a cohort of OLP patients and evaluate the correlation between hematinic deficiencies and OLP. METHODS: A total of 236 OLP patients and 226 age-and-gender-matched healthy controls were enrolled in this study. The levels of hemoglobin (Hb), serum folate, vitamin B12 and ferritin were measured and compared between OLP patients and healthy controls. An REU (reticular/hyperkeratotic, erosive/erythematous, ulcerative) scoring system was adopted and compared between the OLP patients with and without hematinic deficiencies. The correlation between hematinic deficiencies and OLP was analyzed. RESULTS: The frequencies of serum ferritin and vitamin B12 deficiency in OLP patients were both significantly higher than those of the healthy controls. According to gender and age, the profiles of hematinic deficiencies in OLP patients were significantly different. As for the REU score, no significant difference existed between OLP patients with and without hematinic deficiencies. Both serum ferritin deficiency and serum vitamin B12 deficiency were significantly correlated with OLP. CONCLUSIONS: The present study suggested a significant association between hematinic deficiencies and OLP. Iron, folate, and vitamin B12 levels in OLP patients should be monitored routinely. Further studies are warranted to explore the interactions between OLP and hematinic deficiencies.

Cell division cycle associated 7 like (CDCA7L) belongs to the JPO protein family, recently identified as a target gene of c­Myc and is frequently dysregulated in multiple cancers. However, to the best of our knowledge, no studies to date have been carried out to investigate the functions of CDCA7L in glioma. Thus, in this study, the expression level of CDCA7L and its association with the prognosis in glioma were detected through the TCGA database. The mRNA expression levels of CDCA7L in glioblastoma (GBM) tissues and normal brain tissues were detected by RT­qPCR and western blot analysis. To explore the role of CDCA7L in glioma, CDCA7L siRNA was constructed and transfected into U87 glioma cells. The expression levels of CDCA7L and cyclin D1 (CCND1) in glioma U87 cells following transfection with CDCA7L siRNA were measured by RT­qPCR and western blot analysis. CCK­8, colony formation, EdU and Transwell assays were used to measure the effects of CDCA7L on U87 cell proliferation, and flow cytometry was used to monitor the changes in the cell cycle following transfection with CDCA7L siRNA. Xenograft tumors were examined in vivo for the carcinogenic effects, as well as the mechanisms and prognostic value of CDCA7L in glioma tissues. The results revealed that CDCA7L was highly expressed in human GBM tissues, and a high expression of CDCA7L was associated with a poor prognosis of glioma patients through the TCGA database. We demonstrated that CDCA7L was highly expressed in human GBM tissues and 3 glioma cell lines. The downregulation CDCA7L expression significantly inhibited the proliferation and colony formation ability of U87 cells by blocking cell cycle progression in the G0/G1 phase. In addition, we found that the mRNA and protein levels of CCND1 were markedly decreased following transfection with CDCA7L siRNA compared with NC siRNA in vitro. The downregulation CDCA7L expression reduced the number of invading cells. Consistent with the results of the in vitro assays, the xenograft assay, immunohistochemistry (IHC) assay and western blot analysis demonstrated that, in response to CDCA7L inhibition, tumor growth was inhibited, Ki­67 and CCND1 expression levels were decreased in vivo. On the whole, the results of the current study indicate that CDCA7L is highly expressed in human glioma tissues and that a high CDCA7L expression predicts a poor prognosis of glioma patients. CDCA7L promotes glioma U87 cell growth through CCND1.

BACKGROUND: In multiple cancers, long non-coding RNA small nucleolar RNA host gene 20 (lncRNA SNHG20) is generally dysregulated. In the present study, both the biological role and clinicopathological value of lncRNA SNHG20 in glioma are explored. METHODS: Real-time PCR was employed to determine lncRNA SNHG20 expression in glioma patients. The prognostic role of expression of lncRNA SNHG20 was evaluated in a retrospective cohort study. In addition, the association between lncRNA SNHG20 expression and the clinicopathological features of glioma patients, such as tumor recurrence, survival status, follow-up time, WHO grade, resection extent, tumor location, Karnofsky performance scale score, cystic change, tumor size, gender and age, was discussed. By constructing and transfecting siRNAs that targeted lncRNA SNHG20 into the glioma U87 cells, the effects of lncRNA SNHG20 on the proliferation and cell cycle of U87 cells were assessed through cell counting kit-8, colony formation and cell cycle assays, respectively. In addition, Western blot and real-time PCR measured the expression levels of P21 and CCNA1 in U87 cells after being transfected with SNHG20 siRNA. RESULTS: Our results suggested the high expression of lncRNA SNHG20 in human glioma tissues compared with normal brain tissues, which was related to recurrence-free survival and poor overall survival in glioma patients. According to the existing retrospective cohort study, high lncRNA SNHG20 expression was associated with tumor size, extent of resection, WHO grade, follow-up time, survival status and recurrence. Besides, knocking down the expression of lncRNA SNHG20 could inhibit the proliferation and colony formation abilities of glioma U87 cells through cell cycle arrest. Consequently, the expression of CCNA1 was inhibited, and the expression of P21 was up-regulated in U87 cells. CONCLUSION: A high lncRNA SNHG20 expression level predicts the poor prognosis for glioma patients. Moreover, lncRNA SNHG20 can promote glioma proliferation through silencing P21 and thus lncRNA SNHG20 is an independent potential prognostic biomarker for glioma patients.

LncRNA actin filament-associated protein 1 antisense RNA 1 (AFAP1-AS1) is often dysregulated in cancer. We performed this meta-analysis to clarify the usefulness of AFAP1-AS1 as a prognostic marker in malignant tumors. The PubMed, Medline, OVID, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science databases were searched from inception to Augest 7, 2017. Sixteen studies with a total of 1,386 patients were included in the study. The pooled hazard ratio (HR) suggested high AFAP1-AS1 expression correlated with poor overall survival (OS) (HR = 1.98, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.71-2.28), disease-free survival (DFS) (HR = 1.54, 95% CI: 1.22-1.95), and progression-free survival (PFS) (HR = 2.17, 95% CI:1.64-2.88) in cancer patients, without obvious heterogeneity. High AFAP1-AS1 expression also correlated with larger tumor size (odds ratio (OR) = 2.04, 95% CI: 1.54-2.72), advanced tumor stage (OR=2.35, 95% CI: 1.70-3.26), poor histological grade (OR =1.39, 95% CI: 1.02-1.90), lymph node metastasis (OR = 2.71, 95% CI: 1.98-3.72) and distant metastasis (OR = 2.96, 95% CI: 2.03-4.32). Thus high AFAP1-AS1 expression is predictive of poor OS, DFS, PFS, lymph node metastasis, distant metastasis, histological grade, larger tumor size and tumor stage, which suggests high AFAP1-AS1 expression may serve as a novel biomarker of poor prognosis in cancer.

Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between hematinic deficiencies and recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS). Material and Methods: 517 RAS patients and 187 healthy controls were enrolled in the present study. Hematinic deficiencies, including serum ferritin, folic acid, and vitamin B12 deficiencies were assessed for each participant. Gender and age were taken into account and the collected data were statistically analysed. Results: Compared with the healthy controls, a significantly higher overall frequency of hematinic deficiencies was found in RAS patients (p< 0.001). When gender and age were taken into account, significant differences in hematinic deficiencies were observed among RAS patients. Serum ferritin deficiency was much more common in young and middle-aged female RAS patients (age< 60). Serum folate deficiency and serum vitamin B12 deficiency were both much more common in the young adult group of male RAS patients (21-40 years of age). Logistic regression analysis revealed that both gender and age have significant correlation with the presence of hematinic deficiencies in the RAS patients. Conclusions: Significant variations in hematinic deficiencies were demonstrated in RAS patients across different genders and age groups. We suggest that further studies on the hematinic deficiencies of RAS patients should take into account the gender and age of participants (AU)

Aim To detect the expression of miRNA-99b and mTOR in glioma tissues and to investigate the effect of miRNA-99b on the cell invasion ability of hu-man glioma cell line U251. Methods The expres-sions of miRNA-99b and mTOR mRNA in glioma tis-sues and normal brain tissues were detected by real-time PCR. After co-transfection with miRNA-99b mim-ics and wild or mutation type mTOR 3′UTR recombina-tion vector,the specific binding ability of miRNA-99b to 3′-UTR in mTOR gene was examined by luciferase gene reporter system. The expression levels of miRNA-99b,mTOR mRNA and mTOR protein in glioma cell line U251 after transfected with miRNA-99b mimics were measured by real-time PCR and Western blot,re-spectively. The cell invasion was measured by Tran-swell assay. The changes of mTOR and miRNA-99b expression levels in U251 cells after transfection with mTOR PsiCHECK were detected by real-time PCR. The correlation between the expression of miRNA-99b and prognosis was analyzed statistically. Results The expressed level of miRNA-99b was lower, and the ex-pression level of mTOR was higher in the glioma tissues than that in the normal brain tissues. The expression of miRNA-99b was up-regulated, and the expressions of mTOR mRNA and protein were down-regulated in U251 cells after transfection with miRNA-99b mimics. However, the abilities of invasion of U251 cells after transfection with miRNA-99b mimics were inhibited. The relative protein expression levels of mTOR in mTOR PsiCHECK group were significantly different from those in negative control group, but the relative expression levels of miRNA-99b had no signifi-cant difference compared with those in negative control group. Over-expression of mTOR restored the abilities of cell invasion in U251 cells, which was reduced by miRNA-99b. The Kaplan—Meier analysis and Log-Rank Test showed that there were significant differ-ences in overall survival (OS) between the miRNA-99b high-expression and low-expression group. Con-clusions The expression level of miRNA-99b is low in human glioma tissue. miRNA-99b may inhibit the cell invasion activity of glioma cell line U251 in vitro via inhibiting mTOR expression.

BACKGROUND: LncRNA promoter of CDKN1A antisense DNA damage activated RNA (PANDAR) is reportedly dysregulated in various cancers. We performed this meta-analysis to clarify the efficacy of PANDAR as a prognostic marker in malignant tumors. METHODS: The PubMed, Medline, OVID, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science databases were searched from inception to July 3, 2017. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated to explore the relationship between PANDAR expression and overall survival (OS). Odds ratios (ORs) were calculated to assess the association between PANDAR expression and pathological parameters. RESULTS: Eight original studies covering 1,132 cancer patients were included. The pooled HR suggested that high PANDAR expression correlated with poor OS (pooled HR=1.60, 95% CI: 1.09-2.33) in cancer patients. PANDAR expression was also related to lymph node metastasis (OR=3.26, 95% CI: 2.09-5.09), advanced tumor stage (OR=3.60, 95% CI: 2.39-5.44) and histological grade (OR=2.75, 95% CI: 1.73-4.38). Begg's funnel plot showed no evidence of obvious asymmetry for overall survival and lymph node metastasis. CONCLUSIONS: Thus high PANDAR expression appears predictive of poor OS, lymph node metastasis, advanced tumor stage and histological grade in multiple cancers. This suggests PANDAR expression could serve as a biomarker of poor prognosis in Chinese cancer patients.

LncRNA taurine upregulated gene 1 (TUG1) is reportedly dysregulated in various cancers. We performed this meta-analysis to clarify the usefulness of TUG1 as a prognostic marker in malignant tumors. The PubMed, Medline, OVID, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science databases were searched from inception to Jan 11, 2017. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated to explore the relationship between TUG1 expression and overall survival (OS). Odds ratios (ORs) were calculated to assess the association between TUG1 expression and pathological parameters. Thirteen original studies covering 1,274 cancer patients were included in this meta-analysis. The pooled HR suggested that high TUG1 expression correlated with poor OS (pooled HR=1.41, 95% CI: 1.01-1.98) in cancer types other than non-small cell lung cancer. TUG1 expression was also related to distant metastasis (OR=3.24, 95% CI: 1.18-8.93), large tumor size (OR=4.07, 95% CI: 1.08-15.28) and advanced tumor stage (OR=3.45, 95% CI: 2.19-5.44). Begg's funnel plot and Egger's test showed no evidence of obvious asymmetry for overall survival or tumor stage. Thus high TUG1 expression appears predictive of poor OS, distant metastasis, advanced tumor stage and large tumor size. This suggests TUG1 expression could serve as a biomarker for poor prognosis in cancers.

Reclaimed water reuse is an effective method of alleviating agricultural water shortages, which entails some potential risks for groundwater. In this study, the impacts of wastewater reuse on groundwater were evaluated by combination of groundwater chemistry and isotopes. In reclaimed water infiltration, salt composition was affected not only by ion exchange and dissolution equilibrium but also by carbonic acid equilibrium. The dissolution and precipitation of calcites and dolomites as well as exchange and adsorption between Na and Ca/Mg were simultaneous, leading to significant changes in Na/Cl, (Ca+Mg)/Cl, electrical conductivity (EC) and sodium adsorption ratio (SAR). The reclaimed water was of the Na-Mg-Ca-HCO3-Cl type, and groundwater recharged by reclaimed water was of the Na-Mg-HCO3 and Mg-Na-HCO3 types. The hydrogeological conditions characterized by sand-clay alternation led to both total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) removal efficiencies >95%, and there was no significant difference in those contents between aquifers recharged by precipitation and reclamation water. >40years of long-term infiltration and recharge from sewage and reclaimed water did not cause groundwater contamination by nitrogen, phosphorus and heavy metals. These results indicate that characteristics of the study area, such as the lithologic structure with sand-clay alternation, relatively thick clay layer, and relatively large groundwater depth have a significant role in the high vulnerability.

The flexible small-cavity macrocycle, trans-calix[2]benzene[2]pyrrolide (H2L), has been found experimentally to complexate low-valent UIII and UIV with binding pockets (BP) of bis(arene) (Ar) and bis(pyrrolide) (Pl), respectively. This switchable coordination of the uranium center has been explored using relativistic density functional theory (DFT) in this work. Systematic calculations of [(BP-L)Anm(η-H)nBH4-n)]z+ (BP = Ar and Pl; An = U, Np and Pu; m = III and IV; n = 2 and 3; and z = 0 and 1), labeled as BP-Anm-nH, were carried out. Energetics and geometrical/electronic-structure analyses reveal that the size matching between actinide ions and the binding pocket plays a significant role in determining the energetic ordering of isomers. The relatively large-size UIII and NpIII ions are selectively preferred by the large bis(arene) pocket, yielding the most stable isomer of Ar-An-2H; simultaneously formed δ(An-Ar2) bonding helps stabilizing the system. In contrast, the small-size PuIII and AnIV are held by the smaller bis(pyrrolide) to show the energetically favored Pl-An-3H isomer. This size argument is further supported by calculations on the related Th and Pa compounds. The formation reactions of BP-Anm-nH demonstrate an endothermic process when using the H2L ligand reactant. Applying a more basic alkali ligand (A2L; A = Li, Na and K) as the reactant significantly reduces the reaction energy and presents thermodynamic possibility to prepare the low-valent actinide complexes. This is in agreement with the experimental synthesis where K2L was utilized. The redox potentials (E0) from tri- to tetravalent actinides were calculated while including both solvation and spin-orbit coupling effects. The highly reductive nature of the UIII complex was manifested by the calculated E0 of over 1.1 V.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to assess the serum zinc levels in patients with common oral mucosal diseases by comparing these to healthy controls. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 368 patients, which consisted of 156 recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) patients, 57 oral lichen planus (OLP) patients, 55 burning mouth syndrome (BMS) patients, 54 atrophic glossitis (AG) patients, 46 xerostomia patients, and 115 sex-and age-matched healthy control subjects were enrolled in this study. Serum zinc levels were measured in all participants. Statistical analysis was performed using a one-way ANOVA, t-test, and Chi-square test. RESULTS: The mean serum zinc level in the healthy control group was significantly higher than the levels of all other groups (p < 0.001). No individual in the healthy control group had a serum zinc level less than the minimum normal value. However, up to 24.7% (13/54) of patients with AG presented with zinc deficiency, while 21.2% (33/156) of patients with RAS, 16.4% (9/55) of patients with BMS, 15.2% (7/46) of patients with xerostomia, and 14.0% (8/57) of patients with OLP were zinc deficient. Altogether, the zinc deficiency rate was 19.02% (70/368) in the oral mucosal diseases (OMD) group (all patients with OMD). The difference between the OMD and healthy control group was significant (p< 0.001). Gender differences in serum zinc levels were also present, although not statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS: Zinc deficiency may be involved in the pathogenesis of common oral mucosal diseases. Zinc supplementation may be a useful treatment for oral mucosal diseases, but this requires further investigation; the optimal serum level of zinc, for the prevention and treatment of oral mucosal diseases, remains to be determined

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the short-term therapeutic effects of low-dose cytarabine plus surgical resection on elderly patients with trigeminal nerve tumor and to observe the safety. METHODS: A total of 120 elderly patients with trigeminal nerve tumor were divided into a treatment group and a control group by random draw (n=60), and both groups were subjected to resection by stereotactic image-guided endoscopic nasal surgery. Afterwards, the control group was administered with high-dose cytarabine while the treatment group was given low-dose cytarabine for 14 days. RESULTS: Both groups completed treatment, but the effective rate of the treatment group (96.7%) was significantly higher than that of the control group (83.3%) (P < 0.05). The pain scores of the two groups were similar at T0, T1 and T2, but the score of the treatment group at T2 was significantly different from those at T0 and T1 (P < 0.05). During treatment, the treatment group was significantly less prone to complications such as headache, vomiting, vision impairment, nausea and local swelling than the control group (P < 0.05). During three months of follow-up, the appetite, sleep and daily living scores were significantly higher than those of the control group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Stereotactic image-guided surgery was able to treat trigeminal nerve tumor well, and the effect was enhanced by low-dose cytarabine that improved postoperative outcomes and quality of life by dramatically decreasing complications.
